Teacher Training Seminar at IUCA: “Current Trends in Teaching English”
On November 1, the International University of Central Asia (IUCA) hosted a teacher training seminar for English language instructors from Tokmok, Bishkek, and other regions of Kyrgyzstan.
On November 1, 2025, the International University of Central Asia held a professional development event titled “Current Trends in Teaching English: Best Practices for Schools and Universities,” organized by the English Linguistics program.
The goal of the seminar was to enhance the professional competence of English language teachers, encourage collaboration between schools, universities, and language centers, and promote IUCA’s New Learning Paradigm, which emphasizes the principles of the Flipped Classroom and the Questioning Approach. These methods help students develop critical thinking, independence, and the ability to ask meaningful questions — essential skills for the 21st century.
The event began with opening remarks from Dr. Alena Maksakova, Head of the English Linguistics program, who highlighted that modern teachers should not only share knowledge but also inspire students to explore and learn independently.
More than 50 teachers and instructors from Tokmok, Bishkek, and nearby towns participated in the seminar. The keynote speaker was Dr. Dennis Bricault, Fulbright Scholar from North Park University (Chicago, USA) and Professor of English at IUCA’s English Linguistics program. In his workshop, “The First Five Minutes: Warmers for ESL Classes,” Dr. Bricault demonstrated how the opening moments of a lesson can set the tone for student engagement and motivation. His session inspired participants and set a dynamic tone for the day.
The seminar also featured sessions by IUCA faculty and guest trainers, each offering innovative and practical ideas for the classroom:
Berlin Barnett — The Importance of Spaced Repetition in Improving English Retention
Leila Serikova — Questioning Strategies: Encouraging Students to Ask Questions
Lovina Aboki — Switching Seats: Experiencing Modern Classroom Interaction as a Learner
Aizhan Eshimbekova — Flipped and Blended Learning in English Teaching: Bridging School and University Classrooms
Igor Miyasarov — Integrating AI into Students’ Self-Study: Experience from St. Louis Community College, USA
Each workshop combined theory with practical classroom applications, allowing teachers to leave the seminar with ready-to-use strategies and renewed inspiration.
Participants praised the high level of organization and the practical value of the sessions. All attendees received certificates of professional development.
The seminar became not only a platform for sharing experiences and exchanging best practices but also a key step in implementing IUCA’s New Learning Paradigm, which promotes active learning, collaboration, and the growth of a professional community of English teachers across Kyrgyzstan.
