IUCA Master's Students Brought Opera to a Rural School
A joint initiative of Jaratmans and the Kyrgyz National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after A. Maldybaev opened a new world for children
On February 6, 2026, the secondary school named after O. Tekeev in the village of Bukara, located 90 kilometers from Bishkek, hosted a charity concert by artists of the Kyrgyz National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after A. Maldybaev. You can see and hear what it was like in this video. The event became possible thanks to the initiative of Jaratmans from the "Zamanbap Mugalim" program, who study in IUCA's master's program "Pedagogical Activity in Times of Change" while simultaneously working as teachers in rural schools of the region. The program is implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of the Kyrgyz Republic.
For many students who had never left their village, this day became their first live encounter with professional academic art. The program began with masterclasses: People's Artist of Kyrgyzstan Baktybek Ybykeev conducted a vocal masterclass where schoolchildren could not only observe but try themselves how a professional sound is born. Simultaneously, Director of Gallery "M" Meerim Akmatkulova and artist Zulfiya Akimova led a fine arts masterclass. Then the school's assembly hall filled with the sounds of opera and folk music performed by leading theatre soloists: People's Artist of the KR Baktybek Ybykeev, Honored Artists Aizirek Momunova, Aibek Saralaev, Nurzhigit Asanov, and international competition laureates Khristina Sevostyanova, Salima Mamatova, and Murat Derbishaliev.
Teacher-Jaratman Kanykei Sovetova described the significance of the event: "Our village is small, and children have almost no opportunity to experience high art. We want children to see that their world is not limited to the territory where they were born. Culture, the stage, inspiration — all of this can be part of their lives right now." This position is shared by Gulmira Ermatovna, Director of the Innovation Center of RIPKPPR under the Ministry of Education of the KR: "The state standard of school education adopted in March 2025 now says that in addition to knowledge, we develop values in children. Music and musical culture are values we must not lose. That is precisely why the Ministry of Education supports the initiatives of Jaratmans of the Zamanbap Mugalim program, who bring people with different experiences and new formats of work into schools."
After the official program, the Jaratmans conducted informal reflection sessions with children, discussing the impressions, emotions, and thoughts the music evoked. This approach reflects the pedagogical philosophy of IUCA's master's program: transforming vivid events into conscious personal experience, helping children articulate their feelings and understand how art can inspire and expand horizons. Working together with parents, local communities, and cultural organizations, Jaratmans transform schools into spaces of opportunity and discovery — places children attend not out of obligation but with genuine interest and joy.
